Larissa is the capital of Thessaly and one of the largest cities in Greece. According to mythology, Achilles was supposed to be born here, and the ruins of the ancient city can be seen on the Frourio hill.
The city is currently primarily a large industrial, commercial and service center. Tourists can mainly offer interesting museums and traces of the ancient city developing here since the 6th century BC.
The former Acropolis of Larissa is located on the hill of Frourio. Here you can see the ruins of the Ancient Theater and several Greek temples. In addition to them, the ruins of the early Christian Agios Achillios basilica and the Turkish bezestan are located on the hill.
The city also exhibits the remains of the second ancient theater and the foundations of several houses and public buildings from ancient times. The synagogue, the classicist Yeni mosque and numerous churches from different periods of time remind of the multicultural character of the old Larisa.
Among the attractions of Larisa are the local museums. The most important of them are the Larissa City Gallery - the Katsigra Museum with a large collection of 19th and 20th century Greek paintings, and the Diachronic Museum presenting archaeological collections from prehistoric times to the era of early Christianity.
