Messel Pit Fossil Site

Fossils of animals and plants from over a thousand species have been found so far in the area of the former open-cast mine. Among them are the remains of the original horse, extinct birds and the first primates. They are in the local museum. The mine itself can be viewed from a spacious viewing platform.
