The RheinEnergie Stadium was opened in the first half Of the twentieth century in the place of fortifications removed under the Versailles Treaty and is the seat of the football club 1. FC Köln. The stadium can seat over 50,000 spectators during club matches and 46,000 during international games. The stadium also houses a museum dedicated to the native football club and numerous concerts are held.
In 1972, the stadium underwent a reconstruction, which aimed to prepare the stadium for the 1974 World Championships. Unfortunately, due to lack of funds, the construction was not completed on time and Cologne lost the status of the organizing city for Dortmund.
The stadium was initially called Müngersdorfer Stadion, which was changed as a result of acquiring as a sponsor the local energy supplier RheinEnergie AG.
