Roland statue

Local name: Bremer Roland

The Roland statue in Bremen is a statue of the knight Roland standing on the Bremen market square between the town hall and Schütting, the building of merchants. The statue was erected in 1404 in honor of Roland, the main character of the French knightly epic "Song of Roland".

The monument is considered one of the oldest statues of Roland in Germany. The figurine has a height of 5.47 meters and stands on a high podium with a height of 60 centimeters. At the back it is supported by a pillar crowned with a Gothic canopy. In this way, the monument reaches a total height of 10.21 m, which makes it the largest free-standing sculpture of the German Middle Ages.

Up to the 15th century, Roland statues were erected as a sign of freedom in many European cities. The figure of the knight symbolized the independence of the city, the right to free trade and their own jurisdiction. According to legend, Bremen will be free and independent as long as the Roland statue stands on the market square and watches over the city. In 2004, the statue was inscribed on the UNESCO cultural heritage list.
