The Villandry Castle is located in the famous Loire Valley. It belongs to the most visited residences in this region. Since 1906, it has remained in the hands of the Carvallo family, which makes part of the apartments available to visitors. The castle is famous primarily for its magnificent three-level geometric gardens.
The residence was built in the 16th century on the initiative of King Francis I. At first, its owners were the Le Breton family. After the French Revolution, the residence fell into ruin. Doctor Joachim Carvallo picked him up. In the early twentieth century, he began renovating the building. He also placed in his impressive art collection including works of European painting and handicrafts.
The castle creates a Renaissance residential building with an adjoining stone tower, a remnant of an earlier medieval stronghold. Next to them are terraces made of stone, on which the upper part of flower and shrub gardens was placed. Below the castle is a geometric garden that looks as if it is made of matching colorful blocks. Plants create patterns here referring to the Renaissance floral and geometric motifs.
