The castle was built in the tenth century, but in the middle of the eleventh century it was completely destroyed. The reconstruction of the fortress was undertaken at the end of the 12th century by King of England - Henry II of Anjou. The castle was entered in the register of French monuments. The medieval fortress is part of a group of castles on the Loire.
