Tournelle Bridge

Local name: Pont de la Tournelle

The Tournelle Bridge connects the right bank of the Seine with Saint Louis Island. It is an arched crossing made of stone. Among Parisian bridges, it is distinguished by its asymmetrical construction and soaring obelisk of Saint Genowefa, the patron of the city.

The first bridge in this place stood already in the Middle Ages. It was a wooden crossing that survived until the great flood in the mid-seventeenth century. A stone bridge was erected in its place, which was also destroyed by the flood in 1910.

The current bridge was erected in 1928. Its designer was the architect of Polish descent Paul Landowski. The bridge consists of a wide central span and smaller side spans. Under the middle is possible movement of ships. A stone monument of Saint Genowefa stands on the bridge.
