Temple of the Marais

Local name: Temple du Marais

Temple du Marais is a baroque Protestant church in the Marais district. It is a small circular building with a large dome crowned with a lantern. The circle-shaped interior with side chapels is decorated with floral polychromes and pilasters.

The church was designed in the first half of the 17th century for the convent of visiting sisters. His architect, Noel Brulart de Sillery, was fascinated by the architecture of the Roman Pantheon and the central buildings. He created an original building with a round nave, a presbytery added from the east, a choir for sisters, three chapels and two sacristies. A 13-meter dome crowned with a lantern was built above the nave. Outside, the entrance to the church leads through a portal inspired by the work of Michelangelo. Above it is a round window that illuminates the religious choir.

During the French Revolution, the church was closed and, under a concordat signed by Napoleon, it was handed over to Protestants. The temple was seriously damaged during the Paris Commune, but was quickly renovated. The last major renovation was carried out at the beginning of the 21st century.
