Saint-Merri Catholic Church

Local name: Église catholique Saint-Merri

This is a historic, sixteenth-century religious building that represents the late Gothic style. The church does not have many decorations, but tourists can see gargoyle sculptures crowning the gutters, the oldest church bell from the fourteenth century or the baroque altar of the eighteenth century.

An important element of the church's furnishings are the organ from the second half of the 18th century, played by the famous composer Camille Saint-Saens. To this day, organ concerts in Saint-Merri are an important part of the district's cultural life.

The patron of the church is Saint Mederyk, who was an abbot. In the seventh century he went on a pilgrimage to Paris and soon afterwards died in the abbey located in today's church. He was declared a saint in 884, mainly due to the miracle of the city saving him from the Normans.

The present church was built in place of the old one in the first half of the 16th century. Its interior layout is consciously similar to the Notre Dame cathedral, so the building gained the popular name "Little Notre Dame". As one of the few temples, it did not suffer any major damage during the French Revolution.
