Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre Church

Local name: Église Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre

The church of Saint Julian the Poor is a Gothic temple on the left bank of the Seine. Currently, it belongs to the Melkite community, an Eastern Catholic church originating in Greece and the Middle East. In the church you can see both Gothic and Romanesque elements. Due to the current purpose, the presbytery is separated from the nave by an iconostasis.

The church was built for about a hundred years from the mid-12th to the mid-13th century. That is why both Romanesque and Gothic elements can be found in its shape and interior. Romanesque, in addition to the layout are columns with capitals decorated with floral and animal motifs. The temple was rebuilt in the 17th century. Part of the nave was pulled down, which is still visible today, and a new facade was erected.

In 1889, the French government gave the church to the Melkite community. It is one of the oldest Christian churches, originating from the territories of the patriarchates of Jerusalem, Antioch and Alexandria. In the interior appeared a carved wooden iconostasis with a row of viceroy icons and holiday icons.
