Pont Neuf or New Bridge is the oldest existing bridge in Paris. It connects the Louvre with the surroundings of the Abbey of Saint Germain de Pres. It was built in the second half of the 16th century. It is a stone, 12-span structure, 278 meters long, running through the island of La Cite.
The bridge was built on the orders of King Henry III. It was the first Paris bridge of undeveloped houses. Its construction has not changed in any way since its creation. The bridge consists of two parts, on the island of La Cite it expands into Pont Neuf Square, where in the past stood a well with a statue of a Samaritan woman. La Samaritaine department store, built at the beginning of the 20th century, reminds of its existence.
