Launched in 1900, the train is the fastest way to reach Montmartre: the journey takes 90 seconds. The first wagons were powered by a water pump system. They were equipped with 5 m3 water tanks, which were filled at the upper station: the sliding wagon pulled up the wagon with an empty tank. A steam pump pumped water.
