Fountain of the four seasons

Local name: Fontaine des quatre saisons

The Four Seasons Fountain is one of the largest and most beautiful Parisian fountains. It stands on rue de Grenelle and is a great example of architecture from the time of Louis XV. It is an arched structure with a colonnade and a triangular tympanum in the central part. It is decorated with the allegory of Paris and carvings depicting the four seasons.

The fountain was built by the court architect of Louis XV, Edme Bouchardon. Unfortunately, it never fulfilled its role because of the lack of water in the area. Only two of its outflows are placed periodically at the bottom of the fountain in the form of mascarons' heads.

The powerful, baroque building presents the magnificent architecture of the Louis XV era. The fountain looks like a building facade. In the central part under the tympanum, surrounded by columns sits an allegory of Paris in rich robes. Allegorical representations of the Seine and miserable rivers are located on both sides. Sculptures depicting the four seasons and bas-reliefs depicting characteristic works are placed in the side wings of the fountain.
