Church of Val-de-Grâce

Local name: Eglise du Val-de-Grâce

The church of Val de Grace is a baroque temple that was formerly part of the Benedictine monastery. It is a cross-plan building with a dome above the presbytery. The two-story facade is decorated with columns. The interior is decorated with paintings of the Holy Trinity and the open sky.

The church was funded by Queen Anne of Austria in gratitude for the birth of her son, heir to the throne, Louis XIV. She passed it on to Benedictines, whom she repeatedly sought consolation during her unhappy marriage. The church was built for over 50 years. The queen changed plans several times and dismissed subsequent architects.

Finally, a baroque building with a façade decorated with columns and a triangular tympanum was created. The dome located above the presbytery was modeled on St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. It is surrounded by sculptures depicting Purity, Modesty and Harmony. The interior of the church is decorated with sculptural decorations and stucco. The altar is located under a canopy with twisted columns. The interior of the dome is decorated with illusionist painting decoration depicting the glory of the Holy Trinity.
