The Castle of the Dukes of Brittany is located in the center of the capital of the French department of Brittany, Nantes ,. The architectural complex of the fortress consists of, among others: a defensive wall with fortified towers and a bridge over the former moat, residential and administrative buildings, loggias and a gatehouse. Currently, the castle operates a museum dedicated to the history of Nantes.
In the 13th century, the first castle existed in this place, another residence was erected in the middle of the next century. The beginning of the construction of the current castle dates back to the 15th century, when the defensive walls were erected. Interestingly, the residence of the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany was expanded for many centuries, and its last elements were built in the eighteenth century.
The Nantes History Museum occupies 32 rooms of the castle. The exhibition was divided into seven sections: Castle, Nantes and Brittany from Antiquity to the 17th century; Nantes, daughter of the river and ocean; Trade and black gold in the 18th century; Nantes during the revolution; Colonial and industrial port; A new form of the city; Atlantic metropolis today and tomorrow.
