The stronghold was built in 1005 by Count Fulko Nerra, and it was rebuilt to today's Gothic-Renaissance form by Imbert de Bastarnay, chamberlain of Louis XI. The interior decoration of the castle owes to Count Ksawery Branicki, who for two decades imported furniture and works of art, including patriotic canvases, such as the "Massacre in Warsaw in 1861".
