Established in 1984, the museum has been housed in a building that has been a work and gallery of contemporary art since 1995. It was designed by architect Renzo Piano, the creator of of the iconic London office building The Shard. Many works have been placed on the roof, facade and in the immediate vicinity, including the famous Huang Yong Pinga golden pagoda.
