Honfleur is a port town that used to be of great commercial importance in the past. Currently, it is a picturesque seaside resort with a port surrounded by tall tenement houses, from which fishing vessels continue to set out for fishing.
The port was founded in the Middle Ages due to its strategic location. With time, however, he began to fall into the shadow of nearby Havru. The once flourishing and bustling city fell into decline and the port lost its commercial importance.
From the shadows pulled Honfleur the Impressionists, Cloude Monet and Eugen Bodin. The city, and especially the mouth of the Seine, on which it is located, was presented by them many times in the paintings. Today, the town can be visited on the Impressionist trail.
The heart of Honfleur and its biggest attraction is the old harbor. It is surrounded by high tenement houses with narrow facades. Currently, there are restaurants and cafes on their ground floors. Fishing boats are still swaying in the water, but also small yachts and sailboats. Around the city you can enjoy beautiful views of the Normandy coast and the backwaters of the Seine estuary.
