City of the Sea
Local name: La Cité de la Mer
Cite de la Mer is a maritime museum located on the premises of the ferry terminal from 1933 in Cherbourg-Octeville in Normandy. The modernist building houses exhibitions showing the history of researching the underwater world and an aquarium that is home to over 1,000 fish and sea animals from around the world. There is also a Redoutable submarine available for visiting on the dock.
The maritime museum was established in 2002. It is a modern institution that uses multimedia and modern information techniques. Its main part is an oceanarium with 17 aquariums. They show the inhabitants of the seas, grouped by place of occurrence. Other exhibitions bring visitors to the depths of the sea. You can see a collection of replicas of machines that can dive into the deepest depths and make a journey in time to embark on Titianic. The multimedia exhibition takes visitors into the depths of the sea allowing them to become depth explorers for a moment.
In the dock at the museum you can visit the largest submarine available to tourists in the world. Command posts, engine room, on-board equipment as well as cabins of seamen serving on the ship have been preserved here.
