Castelnaud-la-Chapelle is a small, medieval village picturesquely situated among the mountains of New Aquitaine. It is known primarily because of the medieval castle standing on a hill above the buildings.
The origins of the village date back to the 12th century, although traces of human existence in ancient times were also found in the area. However, it was only the Middle Ages that caused the village to develop. The proximity of the fortress extended until the 15th century favored this.
The fortress was one of the seats of the Albigensians, a sect against which bloody crusades were organized. After defeating the rebels in the first quarter of the 13th century, the castle was expanded and became an important guardhouse and seat of the administration of the surrounding goods.
Today, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle is the most important magnet for tourists. Its beautiful location and the charm of the medieval buildings of the village on the slopes and at the foot of the hills create wonderful paintings for photographers and lovers of fortifications. The castle has a museum showing medieval siege techniques and warfare methods.
