A fort defending Calais in the past from the Hames River. It was originally built in the 15th century, but after changes in military techniques it was completely rebuilt in the time of Louis XIV. The fort also included a sluice bridge on the Hames River, which on the one hand allowed the collection of customs duties for tolls, and on the other was an additional protection. If enemies invaded the city by opening the airlock, it was possible to flood it completely.
