The 14th-century Gothic basilica, called the "cathedral in the field", was built in a small village, in an open field, to provide decent service for pilgrims coming to the miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary. The 12th-century sculpture underwent an invasive renovation in the 19th century - the face of Maria was given realistic colors, and the Baby Jesus was added at the same time.
