Castle of Anet

Local name: Château d'Anet

The d'Anet Castle is a Renaissance residence consisting of a residential building, farm buildings, a chapel and a park surrounded by a stone fence with a decorated gate. It was built for the lover of King Henry II, Diana Poitiers. Currently, the interior is decorated according to her time and houses many of her personal souvenirs.

Henry II was associated with Diana until his death. She was a woman of light, a lover of art and literature. It hosted intellectuals and artists in the castle. The king also attended these meetings, and he and Diana took rides and walks in the surrounding forests. The castle was looted during the French Revolution. In the 20th century, he managed to restore the original appearance.

In the castle many places refer to the royal mistress. The gate leads into the yard in the form of a triumphal arch dedicated to Diana, the Roman goddess of hunting. Her naked statue is here. Inside, you can admire tapestries with scenes with the Roman goddess, as well as bedding with monograms by Diana Poiteiers, her personal souvenirs and letters. Her tomb is in the castle chapel.
