Four Dolphins Square
Local name: Place des Quatre Dauphins
Four Dolphins Square in Aix en Provence is one of the main points of the oldest part of the city called Mazarin. Marked out at the beginning of the 17th century, it is surrounded by late Renaissance and Baroque buildings. There is the Four Dolphin Fountain from 1667.
The square was created during the reconstruction of the city during the time of Bishop Michel Mazarin. In 1645 he commissioned the architect Jean Lombardo to make plans. In this way, a Renaissance-Baroque district was created, which was quickly settled by aristocrats and the richest representatives of the townspeople.
The square is surrounded by residences with late Renaissance facades. In the north-east corner stands the Boisgelin Hotel, built in 1655 by the famous architect of the time, Pierre Pavillon. In the center of the square is the Four Dolphins fountain by Jean-Claude Rambot. The metal decoration of the fountain comes from 1912.
