Built in 1173, the cathedral was built on the foundations of a Romanesque church from the 5th century AD, which replaced the temple of Diana from Hellenic times. The building, made of basalt blocks, is a sacred object and a fortress: the walls are 2-3 m thick, and the vertical, smooth walls and small window openings are perfect for defense.
