Mariehamn is the capital of the Åland Islands, an autonomous Swedish-speaking region in Finland. Established in the 19th century, it is an important port and now also a tourist center for the entire archipelago.
The city was built by the Russians in the second half of the 19th century and was named after the Tsarina Maria, the port of Mary, i.e. Mariehamn. In its center and at the quay, the Morska District has been preserved, dominated by low, wooden buildings. The city has two ports located on both sides of the peninsula on which it is located. One of the attractions of Mariehamn is the Pommern, which is moored to the quay and can be visited.
In addition to the Maritime Quarter, which is now dominated by restaurants and souvenir shops, Mariehamn also offers the Aland Maritime Museum, showing old navigation devices, ship and port equipment, and the Aland Cultural History Museum, where you can learn about the history of the Aland Islands.
