The valley is part of the Theban necropolis, which for over 5,000 years was the resting place of Egyptian kings from the 18th to the 20th dynasty. 64 tombs and 20 started buildings were discovered here. The most famous are the tombs of Tutankhamun, Seti, Ramesses I and Amenhotep II. Only a dozen or so tombs are open to the public.
