Hussite Museum

Local name: Husitské muzeum v Táboře

The Hussite Museum is located in the Gothic building of the Old Town Hall in Tabor. It is a modern exhibition dedicated to the history of the Hussite movement and its rediscovery at the turn of the century. Using mockups and figural scenes, life in the former Hussite capital was shown. There are also elements of armament, portraits of leaders and a life-size equestrian statue of Jan Zizka.

The camp was built by the Hussites and was their capital. He is primarily associated with the person of Jan Zizka and the most radical branch of Hussitism. A museum dedicated to this religious and social movement was founded in 1878. It was a time when the ideas of Jan Hus and Jan Zizka again gained publicity and recognition.

The former city hall was the seat of the Museum. It is a building with a facade with three gables. On its floor is the second largest Gothic room in the Czech Republic. In addition to the main exhibition at the Museum, you can also visit the underground which is a system of corridors and basements, which in the past served as warehouses. The museum exhibition shows the next stages in the formation of the Hussite movement and the period of the Hussite wars. There is a mock-up here depicting the siege of Tabor and scenes from the lives of residents and defenders of the city. The intellectual heritage of the movement was also shown, with the writings of Jan Hus and his successors. Children can try on knightly costumes and participate in workshops prepared by employees.
