Malá Strana Bridge Tower

Local name: Malostranská mostecká věž

The Malostranskie Bridge Tower is a complex of two stylishly different towers connected by a gate, forming the entrance to the Charles Bridge on the side of Mała Strana. The building was located on the route of the royal road. It has Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance architectural features. Among the decorations there are sculptures from different periods.

The smaller tower is called the Judith Tower because it was part of the former Judith Bridge located on the site of the current Charles Bridge. It was built in the Romanesque style in the second half of the 12th century. In the 16th century it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style. The gate connecting the towers was erected in the Gothic style.

The new gothic tower is taller than its younger sister. It was built in the place of an earlier Romanesque tower. It is clearly inspired by the Old Town Bridge Tower, located at the other end of the Charles Bridge, on the other side of the Vltava River. Architects Parléřov and Jiřího from Poděbrady were responsible for the design and construction of the new tower.
