The Museum of Czech Cubism is located in the House under the Black Madonna. It is the first cubist building in Prague. A house with huge windows with broken surfaces is one of the best examples of cubism in architecture on a European scale. The museum, which occupies the upper floors of the building, presents the painting and sculpture of Czech representatives of Cubism.
The House at the Black Madonna was built in the years 1911–1912 according to the design of the Czech architect Josef Gosar. It took its name from the figurine of Our Lady of Loreto called the Black Madonna. The sculpture comes from an earlier Baroque building that stood in this place.
Gosar designed a multi-functional building with clean forms and interpenetrating planes. The interiors are also kept in a cubist form. Gosar also designed the bar, chandeliers and lamps in the first-floor cafe. The Museum of Czech Cubism shows the evolution of this style over the years. There are paintings, sculptures and artistic crafts, including utility ones, such as home furnishings.
