Church of St James the Greater

Local name: Kostel svatého Jakuba Většího

The church James the Greater is a Gothic temple, rebuilt in the Baroque style. It is a monastery church with the status of a minor basilica. Cyclical organ concerts take place here. Among the monuments have survived, among others 22 altars, hanging pulpit, frescoes, choir with a triumphal arch, tombs and facade with portal.

On the site of the church of St. James the Greater there was another church before. The creation of this church was probably associated with the acquisition of the relics of St. James the Greater by King Przemysł II Ottokar. The temple and the monastery were completed in 1244. In the next century, the church and the monastery consumed a fire.

King Jan Luxembourgish and his wife Eliška Přemyslovna took care of the reconstruction. During the Hussite wars, the church remained under the protection of the butchers' guild. Nevertheless, the temple was destroyed and had to be reconstructed. These works were entrusted to the architect Ulrico Aostalli, who rebuilt the church in the Baroque style.
