Castle Hazmburk

Local name: Státní hrad Hazmburk

Státní hrad Házmburk are the ruins of a Baroque castle located at an altitude of 418 meters above sea level. Two towers of basalt tower up to the present day - the White Tower (Bílá Věž) and the Black Tower (Černá Věž). The ruins can be visited, from the terrace of the White Tower there is a beautiful view.

The slopes of the Házmburk hill have been declared a natural monument and are under protection. The first settlement existed in this place already in the Neolithic (younger Stone Age). In the period from the 8th to the 10th century an early medieval Slav stronghold was built here.

The castle in the period from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century was the seat of the Czech family Zajíc (from the Czech hare). Hence the name - Hasenburg (German for Zając Castle). In its heyday it was considered an impenetrable fortification. However, it soon lost its significance, was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin. In the nineteenth century, part of the building along with pieces of the hill detached and damaged the buildings of the nearby town of Klapy.
