The Kuris dam on the river of the same name creates a 3.6 square kilometer water reservoir that can hold up to 115 million cubic meters of water. The reservoir is fed by three rivers: Kuris, Limnatis and Krios. The dam itself is 110 meters high and about 550 meters long, making it the largest Cypriot dam.
The proposal to erect a dam appeared for the first time in the 1960s, but construction of the dam did not begin until 1984 and lasted four years. The official opening took place in 1989. In connection with the construction it was necessary to resettle the population living in the village of Alasa.
According to local applications, in the Kuris reservoir you can see a monster known as the "monster of Ayia Napa" from the name of the nearby resort or "Aby Filiko Teras", or "friendly monster". Eyewitnesses claim to resemble a snake or crocodile, but there is no evidence of its existence.
