Paklenica National Park is located in the Velebit Mountains and covers primarily the area of two karst canyons: Mala Paklenica and Velika Paklenica, from which it took its name. The park has an area of about 95 square kilometers and is popular mainly because of the numerous hiking trails and climbing routes on the slopes of karst canyons.
Within the park there is the highest peak of the Velebit range, Vaganski Wierch with a height of 1757 meters above sea level, as well as Holy Mountain with a height of 1753 meters above sea level. The park also has caves, the most famous of which is Manita Peć.
Paklenica National Park was established in 1949 to protect both interesting geological phenomena as well as fauna and flora. There are about 1000 species of plants in the park, of which 79 are endemic. Interesting species of fauna occurring here are, among others, brown bear, European roe deer, golden eagle, peregrine falcon and hawk.
