Mljet National Park Pomena was established in 1960 in the northwest of the island of Mljet, one of the largest (37 km long and 3 km wide) and most beautiful islands in Croatia. It is characterized by a mild climate and a rich flora. There are numerous caves, cliffs, picturesque rocks, lakes and many historic buildings. The biggest attraction of the park is the 12th-century Benedictine monastery erected on a small island in the center of the lake called the Great.
Those seeking active forms of recreation will find excellent conditions in the park and the entire island for hiking, mountain biking, sailing, diving, climbing and fishing. There are hotels, private accommodation and catering facilities on the island. The most valued restaurant is in the Benedictine monastery.
The first inhabitants of the island were the Illyrian tribes, who came here around 2000 BC. In the 2nd century BC, the island was owned by the Romans, as evidenced by the preserved remains of a fortified household. From the 15th to the end of the 17th century, the island was part of the Dubrovnik Republic.
