Odysseus' Cave

Local name: Odisejeva špilja

Odysseus Cave is one of the biggest attractions of the Croatian island of Mljet. It is quite a characteristic karst cave - its upper part has collapsed to form a deep pit. The grotto is also connected by a natural tunnel to the open sea. In good weather and low water levels, it is possible to swim in a cave. According to legend, it was here that Odysseus spent seven long years after the ship crashed on the rocks of the island of Ogygia.

The nearby village of Babino Polje is one of the oldest and largest villages on the island, located at the foot of the Veliki and Mali Grad hills. It lies on the road connecting all the most important places on the island. This place is famous for fertile land (many fruits are grown here, including vines), as well as beautiful forests. The island of Mljet is the most forested island on the Adriatic. It was called the "green island" because of its rich Mediterranean vegetation - about 70% of Mljet's area is covered by forests.
