Lake Desne with the nearby lake called Modro Oko are in a protected landscape area. This place falls under the category of "significant monuments". The surroundings of both lakes are a representative area for the specific landscape of the lower course of the Neretva River. It is characterized by flooded karst precipitation with an abundance of wetland biotopes.
The lower course of the Neretva is a swampy valley. The Delta with the lakes Modro Oko, Desne and Kuti belong to Croatia, while the neighboring Hutovo Blato Nature Park belongs to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The area does not resemble the typical landscapes of Croatia - it is intensively transformed by man. However, arable land and the plains around the lakes are still beautiful and picturesque.
Desne itself is one of the villages located on the Croatian Dalmatian coast. The village lies in a valley surrounded by mountain ranges, and the river valley descends straight into the Adriatic Sea. The patron of the place is Saint George (Sv. Jure).
