Mother Bulgaria Monument
Local name: Паметник "Майка България"
The monument stands in the city center, on the square of the same name. It was unveiled in May 1935. It is dedicated to the memory of soldiers and fighters killed in five wars - Russia-Turkey (1877-1878), Serbo-Bulgarian (1885), two Balkans (1912-1913) and World War I.
The author of the monument was the Bulgarian sculptor Svetoslav Yotsov. At the top of the structure there is a statue symbolizing Mother Bulgaria. It shows a crowned woman kneeling, holding the national flag in one hand and an olive branch in the other, a symbol of peace. The crown on the head of the statue was removed in 1944. It was restored in November 1989, and 22 carats of gold were used to make it.
An eternal fire burns in the crypt under the monument, and a flower garden with benches was established around the entire building.
