The lake is the northernmost of the five coastal lakes of Burgas. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the Black Sea, separated from it by a natural, narrow strip of sand and an artificial dyke. It has an elongated shape, 6 km long and 350 m wide on the north side to 1.6 km in the middle.
Since 2001, the lake has the status of a protected area. It lies on the migratory route of birds. There are over 260 species of birds, including 4 endangered and strictly protected species. There is an information center for tourists on the southern shore of the lake.
It is a shallow lake, and its depth does not exceed 1.4 m. The mud that comes from it has healing properties. Due to its high salinity, it is also used to extract salt. The only salt museum in the country is located near the reservoir.
