The museum is dedicated to the history of the city and the region in ancient times and in the Middle Ages. The collections are displayed in four exhibition halls and in the foyer, where you can see the UNESCO certificate confirming the inscription of the Old Town on the World Heritage List. The museum also houses a collection of historic icons.
The collection includes, among others ancient terracotta statues, Greek vases and a valuable collection of coins. One of the most interesting exhibits is a document with an inscription in honor of the Thracian leader Sadala, dated to the 3rd century BC. about the relations of the then polis with the neighboring Thracian settlements.
The museum was founded in 1956. Initially, it was located in the church of St. John the Baptist. It was moved to the present building, built specifically for this purpose and designed by Hristo Koev, in 1994.
