Rock-Hewn Churches

The set of churches, chapels and monasteries carved into the rock was gradually built from the 13th to the 17th century. Most of them have medieval frescoes that cover the walls and vaults. They are considered a masterpiece of Bulgarian sacred art. The entire complex has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
