Dimitrovgrad is a model socialist city founded after World War II. You can see districts planned from scratch and the center with wide streets, parks and buildings in the style of socialist realism.

The city was founded as an industrial and administrative center and the seat of local authorities. It was planned from scratch according to the assumptions of the socialist theory of cities. They are characterized by dense workers' housing estates, a large number of parks, wide main avenues being communication axes and a representative center modeled on buildings from the Soviet Union. The city is named after the Bulgarian communist activist Georgi Dimitrov.

Apart from the urban layout itself, the most important attractions of Dimitrovgrad are its cultural facilities. They include the Historical Museum and the House-Museum of Penjo Peneva, a local writer and social activist.

In Dimitrovgrad, there is also the Vapcarov Zoo and the Giordano Bruno Observatory, which organizes stellar sky shows and educational activities on space.
