The historic stone bridge is located in the gorge of the Arda River, at an altitude of 420 meters above sea level. The walls of the surrounding gorge are 400 meters high. The bridge is 56 meters long and 3.5 meters wide. It consists of three arches, and on its pillars there are oval holes for measuring the water level. The Sultans Trail, the international long-distance hiking trail, runs across the bridge.
The bridge was built at the beginning of the 16th century by order of Sultan Selim I. It was part of the road between the Thracian Plain and the Aegean Sea. It was built on the ruins of the Roman bridge, which is part of the ancient Via Ignatus road.
According to a local legend, the bridge builder made a pact with the Devil, thanks to which the building was built in record time. It is said that if you stand on the bridge between 11.00 and 12.00 noon, you can see the face of the Devil in the flowing water. On one of the stones you can also see imprints of devil's hooves.
