The gilt statue was created in 1902 on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Golden Spurs - one of the most famous battles of medieval Europe, in which rebel craftsmen and peasants defeated the select troops of French knighthood. At the base of the monument is the image of the death of Robert III d'Artois, commander of the French army.
