The name of the towers comes from the word bruul meaning a small swampy wasteland. The older of the buildings was built in 1385, the younger was erected in 1415 - both are the remains of the city's preserved defensive walls. The towers are connected by the Broelbrug Bridge with a magnificent statue of St. John of Nepomuk.
