The monument was dedicated to one of the most famous inhabitants of Ghent, who saved the city from economic decline during the Hundred Years' War between England and France. Jacob van Artevelde (1290-1345) restored the supply of English wool, which ended hunger and riots caused by the suspension of cloth production.
