The historic basilica was built at the beginning of the 20th century. It is 93 m high and 164 m long, which makes it the fifth largest church in the world. It is also the largest temple in the world built in the style of Art Deco. Two art museums operate at the basilica, including the Museum of Contemporary Sacred Art.
Inside the temple, it is worth paying attention to stained glass windows, whose authors were valued Belgian artists, such as Anto-Carte, Louis-Charles Crespin and Jan Huet. There is a marble altar, numerous sculptures and a baptismal font made according to the design of Albert Van Huffel. During the tour, you can also climb to the observation gallery. It is located just below the dome at a height of 52 m, thanks to which you can see the panorama of the entire city and its surroundings.
The construction of the basilica took place in stages. The cornerstone was laid in 1905, but due to the outbreak of the First and then the Second World War, the temple was consecrated only in the 1950s.
