Mozart's House

Local name: Mozart-Wohnhaus

Mozart's House, which should not be confused with Mozart's Birth House, was the residence of the composer's family in 1773-1787. They occupied an eight-room flat on the first floor, and now a museum is operating here. His permanent exhibition is devoted to the period that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart spent in Salzburg, and his family. Here we will see various documents and portraits, but the most important exhibit is the Mozart piano.

The tenement was built in the early 17th century and belonged to the Spöckner family. The Mozart family moved in here after returning from one of their travels. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived here until 1781 when he moved to Vienna and his father stayed here until his death six years later.

In 1944, a large part of the building was destroyed in the raid. After the war, the preserved part was taken over by the Mozart Foundation, and an office building was built on the ruins. In 1989, the office building was demolished to rebuild the tenement house in its original shape from the 18th century. The museum was reopened in 1996.
