The Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral in Jassy was built in 1887. Its eclectic architecture features elements of the neoclassical, neo-baroque and neo-Renaissance styles. The design of the temple was inspired by the art of the late Italian Renaissance and the architecture of Austro-Hungarian churches.
The interior of the cathedral is decorated with Munich stained glass windows and paintings by Gheorghe Tattarescu, combining Romanian tradition with Western influences, mainly Italian painting. The four biblical scenes depicted in the nave are particularly noteworthy. There is also an iconostasis made by Ioan Babic. The two most valuable icons come from the 16th century and represent Christ the Panther and the Madonna with Child.
The cathedral is one of the tallest historical buildings in Moldova. It is 57 m long and 34 m wide, and its towers are over 52 m high.
