Baltimore Schloss

Lokaler Name: Baltimore Castle

Baltimore Castle, also known as Dunasead, is located on a hill above Baltimore Harbor in County Cork. It is a 17th century fortified manor house. Inside, you can see an exhibition devoted to piracy and the history of the city, and admire its panorama from the observation deck.

The present fortified manor house is not the first building in this place. In the 12th century a Normandy castle was built here, it was destroyed in the middle of the 16th century. The defensive manor house was built around 1620. It is a rectangular structure with a sloping roof. In the past, it was surrounded by a defensive wall. Soon after it was built, the castle was destroyed by Cromwell's army. Its reconstruction took place only at the end of the 20th century.

It is now a local museum and heritage center. The castle received a new roof and exhibition rooms in the attic. There is also an observation deck at the height of the roof. The exhibitions show documents and memorabilia from the city's past. There is also an exhibition devoted to piracy showing the elements of ship equipment, the characters of the most famous mowers and how to fight them.
